SAPEC hoops

The St. Albert Physical Education Council tips off its junior high basketball season next week with nine boys’ and nine girls’ teams hooping it up.

The league opener is Tuesday with the Lorne Akins Gators hosting the Sir George Simpson Voyageurs at 4 p.m. for the boys and 5:30 p.m. for the girls.

The defending Tier I city champions are the Richard S. Fowler Falcons as the boys repeated and the girls finished undefeated for a second straight year while winning a third connective SAPEC banner.

The scores in last year’s finals were 44-37 against Lorne Akins for the boys and 73-49 against the Vincent J. Maloney Marauders for the girls.

The season debut for Fowler is Wednesday against the host Morinville Wolves at 4 p.m. for the girls and 5:30 p.m. for the boys.

Upcoming is the annual SAPEC Boston Pizza Invitational, Jan. 16 to 18 at Fowler, VJM, William D. Cuts and Ecole Secondaire Sainte Marguerite d’Youville.

The tournament features 16 boys’ and 16 girls’ teams and all nine SAPEC teams are entered.

The Fowler boys and girls swept last year’s division A finals.

PK Invitational

The Paul Kane Invitational women’s basketball tournament starts Friday with six games on tap.

The Paul Kane Blues host the O’Leary Spartans, Ross Sheppard Thunderbirds, Bowness Trojans of Calgary, Foothills Falcons of Okotoks, Medicine Hat Kwahommies, Catholic Central Cougars of Lethbridge and St. Mary’s Saints of Calgary.

The tournament opener for Paul Kane is 11 a.m. against O’Leary.

Paul Kane is 1-1 in the metro Edmonton division one league and 5-3 overall.

The next division one game is Wednesday versus the Salisbury Sabres (3-0) at 6:30 p.m. in Sherwood Park.

Division two men

The metro Edmonton division two men’s basketball league has games scheduled next week for the Paul Kane Blues, St. Albert Skyhawks and Bellerose Bulldogs.

First place is on the line as Paul Kane (3-0) hosts the J. Percy Page Panthers (3-0) Monday at 5:30 p.m. and Wednesday’s game against the Strathcona Christian Academy Eagles (3-0) starts at 5 p.m. in Sherwood Park.

Paul Kane is 7-5 overall after going 13-1 in league play as the 2019 division two finalists during a 21-3 season.

The Skyhawks (1-2) are the visiting team against the Archbishop MacDonald Marauders (0-3) Monday at 6:30 p.m. and Wednesday’s rivalry game against the Bulldogs (0-3) goes at 5 p.m. at Bellerose.

In last month’s play-in ability round robin for division two status, the Skyhawks beat the Bulldogs 65-62 at the SkyDome.

Monday the Bulldogs travel to play the Austin O’Brien Crusaders (1-3) at 5:30 p.m.
