Second for Blues
The Paul Kane Blues were the second-best men's team at the Leduc tournament last weekend.
Saturday’s final was the 75-71 loss to the Leduc Tigers.
In the metro Edmonton league, Leduc is 3-4 in division one and Paul Kane is 4-2 in division two,
Paul Kane started off the eight-team tournament with the 99-56 win over St. Joseph of Red Deer and the semifinal was 76-57 against Notre Dame of Red Deer.
Paul Kane is 10-9 overall after losing its second division two game in a row, 94-87 to the visiting Archbishop Jordan Scots (4-3) Monday.
Bellerose results
The Bellerose Bulldogs returned home from the Leduc tournament with a fourth-place result in the senior women’s draw.
The first-place division two team in the metro Edmonton league finished 2-2 and both losses were against division one teams: 82-67 against the Spruce Grove Panthers (1-3) in the third-place game and the 50-34 semifinal against the host Leduc Tigers (2-4).
The tournament started with wins of 64-48 against Lacombe and 65-19 against the Charles Spencer Mavericks of Grande Prairie for last month’s Rise Up champions at Sturgeon Composite High School.
Bellerose was 6-0 in division two and 11-2 overall before Monday’s league game against the Memorial Marauders (0-5) in Stony Plain and the score was unavailable at press time.
Meanwhile, the 1-4 division two Bellerose senior men finished the Leduc tournament as the consolation finalists.
Bellerose lost 70-60 against the division one Tigers (3-4), defeated Lacombe 95-63 and the consolation final was the 68-63 setback to Charles Spencer.
Wolves vs. Spirits
Saturday’s third-place game between the Morinville Wolves and Sturgeon Spirits went down to the wire at the Rock of Ages women’s tournament in Spruce Grove.
Sturgeon led most of the way until late in the fourth quarter when Morinville’s shots started to fall and key three-pointers by Hayley Deveau and Abby Davies gave the lady Wolves a three-point lead in the final minute.
Jordan Hessell recorded 11 points and 21 rebounds for Morinville before picking up her fifth foul with two minutes remaining.
The 53-50 result for Morinville was similar to last year's 3A provincial consolation final, a hard-fought 59-52 decision against Sturgeon.
Leading up to the Sturgeon game, Morinville defeated Oscar Romero 68-35 as Makayla Attfield produced 18 points and 16 rebounds and Deveau added 13 points.
The 50-42 semifinal loss to the St. Peter the Apostle Spartans, the tournament hosts and metro Edmonton division one team, was a back-and forth affair until the last four minutes of the second quarter as the 2019 3A provincial bronze medallists went on an 8-0 run to lead by 11 at halftime.
The Spartans also forced the two-time defending North Central zone champions into a slew of turnovers that proved costly.
The scores for Sturgeon were 65-47 against the Beaumont Bandits and the 68-41 loss to the 3A provincial champion Wetaskiwin Sabres.
Haylee Sidor was named a tournament all-star and Taylor McGrath was the team’s MVP.
Sturgeon, the host team for the 3A provincials in March, is 3-3 in the division two league and 8-10 overall.
