Skyhawks soaring
The St. Albert Skyhawks are piling up the wins as the defending metro Edmonton division one and 4A provincial champions.
The powerhouse women’s basketball team is 4-0 in league play and 12-1 overall this season after Monday’s 105-40 destruction of the Salisbury Sabres (3-1) in Sherwood Park.
Last weekend in Calgary, the Skyhawks finished 3-0 at the Coyote Classic at Centennial High School with victories of 93-57 against the Lethbridge Collegiate Institute Rams, 90-46 against the Bowness Trojans of Calgary and 79-63 against the Semiahmoo Totems of Surrey, the 2019 B.C. AAA champions.
Annacy Palmer fired in seven three-pointers against the Rams, including four in the third quarter, for a team-high 23 points as player of the game.
Teå DeMong tacked up 20 points, Kamryn DeKlerk chipped in with 14 and Mimi Sigue added 13.
DeMong’s four three-pointers and 22 points overall earned her player of the game honours against Bowness. Palmer contributed 21 points and Maty Drefs had 10.
The Skyhawks out-scored Semiahmoo 26-18 in the fourth quarter as DeMong scored 10 of her 19 points in the last 10 minutes as player of the game.
The halftime score was 33-31 Semiahmoo.
Sigue sank 17 points and DeKlerk’s 16 points included two three-pointers in the first quarter.
Today at 5:30 p.m. the Skyhawks play the St. Francis Xavier Rams (3-0) at the SkyDome.
Bulldogs host two
The Bellerose Bulldogs host a doubleheader today in metro Edmonton basketball.
The rivalry game between the Bulldogs (1-3) and St. Albert Skyhawks (2-2) in the division two men’s league tips off at 5 p.m.
Last month at the SkyDome, the Skyhawks defeated the Bulldogs 65-62 in the play-in ability round robin for division two status.
Both teams are coming off road wins Monday of 65-62 for the Bulldogs against the Austin O’Brien Crusaders (1-4) and 88-78 for the Skyhawks against the Archbishop MacDonald Marauders (0-4).
The division two women’s match between the Bulldogs (5-0) and Beaumont Bandits (2-3) starts at 6:30 p.m.
The Bulldogs are 8-0 overall after Monday’s 62-33 rout of the host Ross Sheppard Thunderbirds (2-3) in league play.
Kirsten Reid scored a team-high 12 points and had three steals, Ella Burch recorded 10 points and eight rebounds and Jordana Rivet added nine points and four steals for last year’s 12-2 division three champions.
Spirits at home
The Sturgeon Spirits are in action tonight in metro Edmonton division two women’s basketball.
Tipoff is 6:30 p.m. against the Memorial Marauders (0-4).
The host team for the 3A provincial women's championship in March is 2-2 in league play after Monday’s 75-60 loss against the Strathcona Christian Academy Eagles (3-1) at Sherwood Park.
