All-star Sabres

The 30th annual Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League all-star game features representation by the St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres on the ice and behind the bench.

The north all-star team includes defenceman Ben Constantino and forwards’ Carmelo Crandall and Jack Ketsa, plus head coach Steve Ewaskiw and his staff.

The all-star game is Jan. 11 at 2:30 p.m. at Bill Hunter Arena.

League play resumes this weekend after the Christmas break with the Sabres (17-5-1, 105 GF/66 GA) first in the north conference and second overall behind the Red Deer Rebels (18-1-2, 93 GF/32 GA) of the south conference.

The Sabres skate tonight in Leduc against the Oil Kings (12-9-1) at 7:30 p.m. and Monday against the Sherwood Park Flyers (10-8-4) at 6:45 p.m. at Jarome Iginla Arena.

Upcoming for the Sabres is the John Reid Memorial Tournament and in pool play at Go Auto Arena the Sabres have games on tap Jan. 16 against Balgonie (Sask.) Prairie Storm at 10:45 a.m. and the Los Angeles Jr. Kings at 8 p.m., which is also the Teddy Bear Toss game in support of the St. Albert Food Bank, and Jan. 17 against the St. George’s Saints of Vancouver at 1:30 p.m.

Against the Kings, fans are invited to bring a teddy bear wrapped in a plastic bag to throw on the ice after the Sabres’ first goal.

Sharks in Calgary

The first game in 2020 for the midget elite St. Albert Sharks is today against Calgary Fire White in the Alberta female Hockey League.

Faceoff is at 4:45 p.m. at Max Bell Centre.

Fire White (10-2-2, 30 GF/20 GA) and Calgary Fire Red (11-2, 43 GF/24 GA) are the top south division teams.

The Sharks (9-3-1, 30 GF/24 GA) are second in the north division, two points behind the Lloydminster Steelers (9-3-1, 29 GF/20 GA) and two in front of the Edmonton Pandas (8-2-2, 32 GF/25 GA).

Regan Ackroyd leads the Sharks in points with 10 in 13 games and Sierra Whillans has scored a team-high seven goals in 10 games.

Winter Games

The female and male zone rosters are finalized for the Alberta Winter Games, Feb. 14 to 17 at Airdrie.

The rosters were selected based on performances at regional camps in Innisfail and Wetaskiwin for females born in 2005 and 2006 and Vegreville, Edmonton, Olds and Calgary for males born in 2007.

The following hockey players with St. Albert and area listed as their hometowns are competing at the Winter Games:

Zone 5 females: defenceman Robyn Brokenshire and forward Jet Devlin.

Zone 6 females: defenceman Grace Charko and forward Lauryn Taylor.

Zone 7 females: defenceman Sadie Makokis and forward Braelyn Plaquin.

Zone 7 males: netminder Tanner McBride (Sturgeon County) and defencemen Jack Kachkowski and Dylan Karran.

Zone 8 males: defenceman Connor Schmidt and forwards’ Finn Kallay, Will Lutic, Joseph Stabile and Caleb Therres (Morinville).

The Winter Games is a multi-sport event for developing athletes 11 to 17 years old selected to represent eight zones in Alberta in 20 sports.

Hockey Alberta coordinates the hockey portion of the Winter Games as a core segment of its development program.
