Rams tournament

St. Albert Rams Lacrosse is hosting 89 teams from Alberta and Saskatchewan at the Jeremy Richardson Memorial Baggataway Tournament this weekend.

The tournament is for B and C level and female house league teams, and the Rams are represented by nine teams.

The age divisions are novice, peewee B, peewee C, bantam B, bantam C and midget male, and novice, peewee, bantam and midget female.

Games are scheduled for Servus Credit Union Place and the Akinsdale, Kinex and Morinville arenas.

Action starts Friday afternoon and the division finals are Sunday.

Visit ramslacrosse.ca for schedules and results.

The 23rd annual tournament honours the memory of Jeremy Richardson, the first Ram to be drafted into the National Lacrosse League in 2003 as the third-round pick (27th overall) by the Calgary Roughnecks.

In August of 2003 the former St. Albert Saints hockey player was diagnosed with stage three malignant melanoma and died on Nov. 5, 2005, at the age of 23.

The Rams renamed the Baggataway tournament in recognition of Richardson’s dedication to lacrosse.

The Jeremy Richardson Memorial Award will be presented Sunday to a bantam or midget player in the tournament, nominated by their team’s coach, who displays the same qualities as Richardson.
