Soccer coverage of Impact women and Rangers

Impact 4 women

Monday’s victory put the St. Albert Impact 4 division 1A women’s team in the driver’s seat for a playdown berth in the Edmonton District Soccer Association.

The defending Tier I provincial champions defeated the Spruce Grove Saints 2-1 at Larry Olexiuk Field as Brittany Kindzierski and Brittany Purkis scored in support of goalkeeper Anastacia Lalonde.

The outcome left the Saints (8-4-1) with one more loss than the Impact (9-3-1), who also holds the tiebreaker as the top two teams advance to the playdowns to determine the EDSA rep for Tier I provincials. The Wind (12-1) is first overall.

Kindzierski’s goal was her 14th of the season for second place in the division scoring race.

The 2018 EDSA female player of the year also leads the St. Albert Impact 1 premier team in goals with 10.

Saturday’s match for the Impact against ASC Fury/KC Trojans 2 (4-3-4) was rained out at Goldstick Park.

Thursday the Impact plays Sherwood Park Phoenix Reserves 2 (6-4-3) at 7 p.m. at Riel Park.

No. 9 for Rangers

Friday’s vintage performance by the St. Albert Rangers marked the ninth win in a row for the undefeated 35-plus masters men’s team in the Edmonton District Soccer Association.

The 6-0 division 1B result against Barrabases FC (2-4-3) at ESA Complex featured offensive contributions from Alan Smith, Kevin O’Kell, Oscar Sanchez and Brent (Irish) Jenkins.

Highlighting the solid defensive effort to secure the clean sheet were a trio of midfielders – Matt Korobanik, Mark Steinke and Dan Brazinha – and the stalwart play by Chris Tersmette at right back.

Upcoming for the Rangers (9-0-2) is the Aug. 9 match against Sahara FC (4-4-3) at 7 p.m. at Kinsmen Park.

Impact 5 women

The next division 2A match for the St. Albert Impact 5 team is Thursday in the Edmonton District Soccer Association.

Kickoff is 6:30 p.m. against Winds SH (6-8) at Riel Park.

The Impact (8-1-2) are battling Rio Terrace FC (9-2-1) and Sherwood Park Phoenix 3 (9-1-1) for playdown berths as the top two teams make the Tier II provincial qualification round.

The Impact were undefeated in 10 matches before suffering their first loss of the season, 6-4 to Rio Terrace last Thursday at Coronation Park.
