Solidarity

With the crisis in Ukraine, the county has several ways to help everyone show their support.

Eiblis Doherty, Economic Development Officer, says, “Strathcona County is proud to have strong ties to Ukraine due to many residents with Ukrainian heritage. As a municipality, we stand with Ukrainians and express our support for the Ukrainian-Canadian community.”

From donating money and supplies to housing refugees, the county’s website lists many ways residents can help.

Nature filled attractions

Nature abounds throughout the county in many different ways. During the pandemic as families sought outdoor spaces for recreation, many of those attractions gained new fans.

“We saw an increase in our natural areas being used, such as the Beaver Hills Biosphere,” says Doherty. “There are several walking paths and hiking trails found across the municipality that are popularly used by residents and visitors. We’re also popular with bikers as we have great pathways and roads that are kept in great condition and the Ministik Bird Sanctuary has several hundreds of different species of birds for people to enjoy.”

Dining

Doherty points to another reason why people love to live in or visit Strathcona County. The food!

“New restaurants like Bodega Tapas & Wine Bar by Sabor have opened and offer residents and visitors a new type of dining experience, while popular favourites like La Patrona have expanded to open a second location, aptly called ‘The Other Place.’ Also opening last year is a local gem, Everyday Food Co. They offer breakfast and lunch specials along with baked goods – their cinnamon buns are a must-try!”

Jācek Chocolate Couture, Confetti Sweets and more let you enjoy a tasty treat or package up a beautiful gift for any occasion.

Arts and culture

When not enjoying nature or unique dining experiences, check in on the many art galleries and museums in the region. From contemporary art to a look back the area’s history in the Strathcona County Museum, there truly is something for everyone to enjoy.

Farmer’s markets

No visit to Strathcona County is complete without its famous Farmer’s Markets.

“There are several that take place each week: Sherwood Park Farmers Market is every Wednesday, Salisbury market is every Thursday, and the Ardrossan market is every Tuesday in the summer months (with special markets happening monthly in the colder months).” Doherty explains. Also, “Open Farm Days will be taking place on August 13 and 14 and will be a great way for people to get out and meet a farmer or food producer.”

Round out your farm-to-table experience with U-pick days on one of the many farms, a visit to a local winery, or stop in at the local flower farm or one of the many greenhouses. Go early in the season; many have discovered these gems during COVID and products move fast.
