Calming down traffic

letter-sta

Regarding the narrowing of the streets from both sides in various areas in hopes to slow down the traffic from speeding:

This may have been a project of careful thinking – to bring attention and train drivers to get into a good habit to slow down and not speed and to enforce safety. However, I see that these narrowing of the streets with these curbs going into the streets are somewhat of a danger. I see that you do have the poles to indicate that they are there. I fear that these may cause accident – someone may drive into these, or walking, they may trip and fall.

I would like to say that everyone with a valid operator’s license should drive sensibly, responsibly, follow, obey and travel at the speeds posted. It is a privilege and a convenience to be able to drive, maintain your independence; to get from one place to the other. Calming down traffic in one area and drivers speed in another area – that is not smart and should not happen. However, we all have days that we make mistakes – perhaps it is other matters – drugs, alcohol, that present unsafe moments in traffic. Speeding is a danger.

I should also mention that there are certainly many responsible, aware drivers who are cautious. My experience – I walk with a walker. I was going to the bank close by. It is a busy roadway. I was waiting for all the traffic to clear. Along came this kind lady – she parked her car in the middle of the intersection and came to direct traffic and, from the other way, the driver already had stopped, so I was able to cross both sides in safety to the bank. I did thank the lady and waved a thank you to the driver, but again, I write of this in the local paper. There are very many kind, caring, warm drivers who pay attention and many that see that you are having a problem, come to give a helping hand. As a senior, I am blessed and grateful to all.

Impatience is also human nature, so drive with caution and be safe every day.

Some other points: Speed limits at some spots are not clear – where they begin and where they end. As for lights, sometimes they stay on forever on one side while on the other side, only two cars go through. These could be looked into. I do not drive presently, but it may cause drivers to make errors.

Thank you,

Mary Cienkowski, St. Albert
