Columnist should heed his own advice and do some research

This letter is in response to the column “Students’ green protest not best use of time” by Ken Allred, published in the March 30 St. Albert Gazette.

The column suggests that students are wasting time by protesting. If that is so, what else should we be doing to make a stand? Watch politicians and people like yourself ignore the fact that our planet is dying because of the consequences of poor decisions made by humans?

May I reference a recent report by CBC posted on April 1, 2019, which states that Canada’s temperature is rising two times faster than anywhere else on Earth. So I request that you do your part in research, and I’ll do my part in reducing my ecological footprint, one step at a time. Alberta should be taking advantage of its economic and technological opportunities, to invest in renewable energy, and follow the footsteps of global leaders such as Sweden. If we educate our society about the positive impacts of renewable energy, we could insure a safe and sustainable future for all generations.

If skipping class is not the best choice, in your view, but researching is, I must say you are missing the whole point of protesting. Youth, such as myself, have taken into our own hands to let our voices be heard about this global threat. We are doing this because adults are not doing enough. So may I advise you, Ken Allred, to do some research yourself, on actually what a real disaster climate change is and what an impact we have, and continue to have, on the dramatic temperature changes on our planet.

Eva Newton (age 12), St. Albert
