Erin Ridge traffic calming encourages speeding elsewhere

Before Linda Wiggins moves out of Erin Ridge or St. Albert ("Erin Ridge traffic calming goes too far," Aug. 17,) she might want to put "pedal to the metal" on the eastern straight-away section half of Eldorado Drive where traffic-calming measures are absent and where few motorists drive "30 to 35 kph per hour," as she claims occurs elsewhere.

As an added bonus for would-be speedsters, enforcement is practically nil, thereby exacerbating the problem of 60-80 kph vehicles.

In addition to calming measures, the western half features a gentle curve and street parking from the adjacent school. As a result, irresponsible drivers gun it on the eastern half to make up a few "lost" seconds. Likewise, those turning off Bellerose Drive gun it immediately because the western half is just so slow going.

The other day, I noticed a moving van in the driveway of a neighbour, who has a toddler and a baby on the way. When I enquired why the move, the response was immediate and succinct: “The traffic.”
