It was interesting to read in the Saturday, Sept. 28 edition of the Gazette the article, "Major overhaul of city governance suggested".

This motion being proposed by Coun. Hansen is nothing new, as in 2013 the council of the day had formed a governance review committee that included councillors Wes Brodhead, Malcolm Parker, then-Mayor Nolan Crouse, the city manager and legislative services officer working with Western Management Consultants.

A series of recomendations were brought forward to council; however, given that a municipal election was in October, it was decided to postpone any implementation. The new council did not make any changes in the governance process.

Moving forward, it would be a suggestion that before having administration spend a lot of time developing a process and potentially paying consultants to study governance structure, the 2013 file be "dusted off" as this would be a fiscally responsible approach given the current environment of fiscal restraint.

"No need to reinvent the wheel," as the saying goes.

Malcolm Parker, former city councillor
