HINTON, Alta. — Police have upgraded charges against a man accused in the deaths of a 24-year-old mother and her 16-month-old son in west-central Alberta.

RCMP say Robert Major, who is 53, now faces two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of indignity to human remains.

Major was originally charged with two counts of second-degree murder and one count of indignity to human remains.

RCMP have said the woman, Mchale Busch, and her son, Noah McConnell, died on the afternoon of Sept. 16 before they were reported missing.

Police have said the deaths took place in Major's apartment in Hinton, Alta., about 290 kilometres west of Edmonton.

RCMP say Major’s next court appearance is set for Wednesday in Hinton provincial court.
