LLOYDMINSTER – A preliminary hearing for a man accused of money laundering, drug trafficking, and illegally carrying a concealed restricted handgun, went ahead in Lloydminster Provincial Court on Feb. 1.
Mohamed Ilmi, 46, of Edmonton, Alta., was committed to stand trial in Battleford Court of King’s Bench by consent. A trial date will be set.
Ilmi was nabbed by the Maidstone RCMP Roving Traffic Unit that patrols Highway 16, the Saskatchewan portion of the Trans-Canada Highway system. During the traffic stop, officers saw a large amount of cash in plain view.
During a search of the vehicle, police found several more bundles of hundreds of thousands of dollars in vacuum-sealed packages, a restricted handgun, two loaded magazine cartridges, and a large amount of methamphetamine.
The Maidstone RCMP Roving Traffic Unit had stopped Ilmi on May 31, 2023.
Ilmi was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, possessing a firearm without a license, possessing a prohibited firearm without having a license, being in a vehicle knowing there is a firearm, possession of a restricted firearm with readily accessible ammunition, possession of a restricted firearm and a prohibited device while prohibited by a court, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, laundering the proceeds of crime, and possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking.
After Ilmi was arrested, and a few others were charged with drug trafficking following traffic stops, Supt. Grant St. Germaine, Officer in Charge of Saskatchewan RCMP Traffic Services, praised the work of the roving traffic unit.
“I am incredibly proud of the work that is being done across the province by our officers and partners at Saskatchewan Highway Patrol. By taking all of these illicit items off the road and out of criminals’ hands, it demonstrates our commitment to keeping the public out of harm’s way."
