A woman from Caroline died yesterday following a motor vehicle collision just east of the James River General Store, police have said.
The collision, which was reported to the Sundre RCMP on Thursday, Feb. 29 at about 3:20 p.m., was between a semi truck and a passenger vehicle, reads part of a police press statement issued Friday, March 1, without providing further details about the nature of the incident.
At about 3:40 p.m., STAR-1 from Calgary was dispatched to the scene of the crash, which occurred amid a substantial snowfall along Highway 587 – or the road to Bowden – in the area of Range Roads 44 and 45 north and east of Sundre.
“I advised them of the weather,” said Sundre Fire Department Chief Ross Clews, referring to STARS.
“Conditions were not conducive to them flying,” Clews told the Albertan on March 1, adding that STARS ultimately “made the decision to turn around.”
For its part, the Sundre Fire Department mustered up “a full response,” he said.
That included the command truck as well as a rescue unit and a fire truck along with a medical support unit, he said.
“Upon arrival, it was determined that the driver of the passenger vehicle – a 26-year-old female resident of Caroline – was deceased,” RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Gina Slaney wrote in the presser.
“The cause of the collision remains under investigation. Condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.”
