Country singer-songwriters Corb Lund and Ian Tyson pair up for a symphonic evening at the Winspear Centre on Sept. 19.

The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra is renowned across North America for its beautiful classical sound. But it’s also a progressive body that has a tradition of partnering with other genres and creating unique fusions.

One of the most exciting blends for the upcoming season is the teaming of Canadian country troubadours Corb Lund and Ian Tyson with the ESO on Sept. 19 at the Winspear Centre.

Both singer-songwriters have won multiple awards for their music that reveals common themes of life in the West. Their cowboy songs touch on horses and buffalo, cattle rustlers and drivers, drifters, bootleggers, ranchers and rodeo riders, and of course, lovers.

Lund is described as a North American country star who reflects his heritage in a mix of Americana, roots, alt-country and rock.

On the other hand, Tyson is a Canadian icon boasting more than six decades influencing the country scene. His Four Strong Winds has become a Canadian legacy piece recorded by more than 30 American artists including Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Harry Belafonte and Johnny Cash.

The two prairie poets first performed together in 2012 and have since told stories interspersed with songs at festivals and one-off concerts across the country.

Edmonton’s 52-piece symphony will simply add to the richness of the duo’s songs. The symphony will play the same melodies fleshing out the music and producing an incredibly beautiful wall of sound.

Tickets start at $25 and go on sale Friday, July 19 at 10 a.m. Call 780-428-1414 or online at winspearcentre.com.
