Kuné descends on Winspear

The Toronto-based orchestra creates a world sound reflecting Canada's vast musical traditions
2209 Kune Winspear
Kuné, Canada's Global Orchestra, introduces its diverse cultural sounds at the Winspear Centre on Jan. 14.

Twelve musicians, 12 musical traditions, one global sound. They are Kuné, Canada’s Global Orchestra.

Kuné was developed at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto as a way to reflect and explore Canada’s rich cultural diversity.

The name alone is most fitting. It means “together” in Esperanto. The musicians are from every corner of the world: Peru, Burkino Faso, China, Mexico, Ukraine and beyond.

From their home countries, musicians play a diverse array of instruments ranging from Iran’s tar to Greece’s bouzouki to Pakistan’s sitar.

They released a self-titled inaugural album in 2018 whereby they use music as a common language to communicate what words cannot.

Kuné performs at the Winspear Centre on Jan. 14, 2020. Tickets start at $25. Call 780-428-1414 or visit winspearcentre.com.
