LETTER: Complaints about mayoral win don't make sense

Re: "Losing her way to the top not a win for Heron," Letters, The Gazette, Oct. 27.

I didn't know what to think of this letter. So, the letter-writer is actually complaining that the person who got the most votes won. Go figure. You would think conservatives would love that.

Yes, the majority of the people did not vote for any one candidate in this election, but more times than not that is usually how it works in almost any election. It is up to the winning candidate to recognize the situation and do their best to represent all those in their constituency, which includes those who did not vote for them. I have confidence that Mayor Cathy Heron will do that.

This also does not mean that the mayor has to vote in a way that will appease every single individual. That is impossible. I just expect council to have more information at their disposal than I would personally to make decisions that affect our city. That's why I am not in favour of having these silly referendums. I expect our elected officials to do the work they were elected for, which is to gather and interpret all available information to make decisions.

Pathetic is my opinion about the letter. Equally pathetic is the candidate who wants a recount because the results in the election didn't reflect the "sentiment on the street." What street was he talking about? It certainly wasn't mine. So, since this street doesn't agree, the machines that counted the votes must be wrong?

It seems to me there are citizens out there who are angry with the results. I am, too. I'm not happy with all the councillors who got in, but I know enough to know how a democratic election works and not to play Trump when things don't go your way.
