LETTER: New council must show accountability to taxpayers

'It will be us taxpayers who will be paying for these possible losing propositions for many years if they are not scrutinized properly.'

Thank you to Angela Wood for putting your name forward for the position of mayor in our civic election. Your statement in The Gazette, Oct. 20 is absolutely correct — "A lot of St. Albertans wanted a change," and 6,328 voters agreed with you.

Cathy Heron's win by 599 votes can not be considered a vote of confidence, but perhaps more of a wake-up call about the number of dissatisfied voters regarding proposed projects.

Many of the candidates claimed that more transparency should be available to taxpayers regarding the Municipal Energy Corporation and the Badger Lands solar farm. This must happen! Public forums and printed information must be held with the true costs and projections of these projects.

Kevin Scoble's position is to give information regarding projects, not influence decisions on them. It will be us taxpayers who will be paying for these possible losing propositions for many years if they are not scrutinized properly.

To the new council members, please show us accountability!

Sylvia Bilsky, St. Albert
