LETTER: Premier must change rules so people dying in hospital can receive visitors

'It is a shame of the health-care system that anyone should die alone or without the support of those around them who care.'

My father, Frederick Lee Berg, passed away, alone, on Jan. 25, 2022, on unit 18 of the St. Albert hospital.

Mr. Berg was a former member of the Canadian Army (honourably released) as well as a retired captain of the St. Albert Fire department (a very well-liked and respected member of his community).

He was in the hospital awaiting transfer to a long-term care facility due to his advanced dementia.

His unit was on COVID “lockdown” and as the result of Premier Jason Kenney's rulings, was not allowed any visitations. Prior to the lockdown he was limited to two people who were allowed to see him. After his death we were allowed to see his remains even though the unit was still in lockdown. We had to gown, glove, mask, and shield to witness him.

Why were we not allowed to follow those same procedures and see him prior to his death? It makes no sense that a dying person must be alone without the comfort of those who love him.

My goal is not for compensation, or apologies. How can the rules be altered so this situation does not happen to anyone else?

It is a shame of the health-care system that anyone should die alone or without the support of those around them who care.

Elzear A. Berg, Spruce Grove
