Letter: Seal sidewalk cracks, save money

This morning I am listening to the sounds of our taxpayer money being spent unnecessarily. St. Albert crews are currently in our cul-de-sac replacing sidewalks that had small cracks running through them.

This morning I am listening to the sounds of our taxpayer money being spent unnecessarily. St. Albert crews are currently in our cul-de-sac replacing sidewalks that had small cracks running through them.

I am all for the maintenance of city infrastructure, but I feel the criteria for sidewalk replacement is a little too easygoing. That, or the manager for that budget is too loyal to his team and wants to maintain his fiefdom.

This spending was probably not an obvious target for reduction as a line item in the budget, but from what I am seeing, it is definitely an area for savings.

The city needs to start spending money a little more carefully and, in this case, could we consider sealing small cracks in concrete before spending thousands replacing it, which in my observation, cracks again within the next year at least half the time!
