LETTER: Sidewalks a slippery challenge for seniors

'Perhaps the best way to negotiate the icy sidewalks is to simply wear a bicycle helmet and a pair of ice skates.'

I will be 70 years old shortly. Some 45 years ago, I was amazed when I first moved to St. Albert. The City regularly even plowed the residential side streets and sanded every one.

Forty-five years, try walking the sidewalks, the exception being walking around City Hall. A sweeper goes around about twice a day, whether it needs it or not.

Not everyone in the community has a vehicle, especially low-income seniors.

Perhaps the best way to negotiate the icy sidewalks is to simply wear a bicycle helmet and a pair of ice skates. It's a pretty safe bet you won't encounter any sand or gravel these days.

Ralph Michael Gerndt, St. Albert
