LETTER: Solar farm 'another scheme' just like Servus Place

"The only way to put the brakes on would be to bring a petition to council, but I also remember the question about the library — it really did not matter what St. Albert people wanted."

Re: "Final vote to borrow $33.75M in solar-farm cash hits council Aug. 30," The Gazette, Aug. 11.

Is this deja-vu? Another scheme for us to spend millions of dollars!

I remember the Servus Place debacle — we ploughed more and more money into this and even today it is continually being fixed. We pay extra on our taxes for Servus just as we would do with the Badger Land development and we don't even know how the figures were developed for this latest scheme.

As an older person in this community, perhaps I should not get upset about this — I won't be around for that much longer — but I do have a conscience. Lots of those people on council at the present time may not be around to start this and see it through, either. The only way to put the brakes on would be to bring a petition to council, but I also remember the question about the library — it really did not matter what St. Albert people wanted.

Do we really want to run our own enegy company? Will it make it economical for people who live here?

It seems to me we still have delusions of grandeur, a belief that we are the centre of the universe. I think we have to be careful of what we wish for.

Elizabeth Allchin, St. Albert
