The grapes of South Africa are making their way to St. Albert Seniors Association’s annual wine fundraiser.

Sommelier Tara Smith is keeping under wraps the five wines she’s selected for Flavours of the Cape taking place on Saturday, Nov. 4 at Red Willow Place.

Africans & African Descendants Friendship Club has stepped up to suggest five diverse dishes that not only show the artistry of African cuisine but also highlight the subtle aromas of selected wines.

The first course introduces a white wine paired with cornbread muffins and apricot jam. During the second course, a second white wine is paired with mackerel fish cakes and a chutney spread.

Switching to red wine for the third course, guests can expect to enjoy biltong, a type of dried cured meat and barbecued boerewors, a South African sausage.

Bobotie, the national dish of South Africa, is paired with a red wine for the fourth course. Traditionally bobotie is made with sweet, curried ground beef, topped with a creamy milk and egg custard.

The grand dessert is malva pudding paired with a third red wine. Malva pudding is a baked sweet pudding that contains apricot jam and has a spongy caramelized texture like cake.

Flavours of the Cape is a major fundraiser that supports numerous senior’s activities including Meals on Wheels, bus service, social worker assistance, classes and programs.

Additional evening events include a 50/50 draw, door prizes, raffle draws, and a live and silent auction. Tickets are $75 and can be purchased at 780-459-0433 or in-person at 7 Tache St.
