Now in its third incarnation, the Varscona Theatre Alliance’s Crystal Ball introduces a special guest from the shadowy dark world of vampires.

Actor Tyson Houseman, best known for his appearance as Quil in the recent vampire blockbuster New Moon, headlines the event with a heart throbbing cast.

Jeff Haslam and Sheri Sommerville take on the hosting duties while performers sharing the bill are Kendra Connor, Andrew MacDonald Smith, Farren Timoteo, Shannon Blanchet and St. Albert Children’s Theatre musical director Rachel Bowron.

Andrea House and Chris Smith provide additional entertainment singing a tune from the Fringe musical Forget Me Not and Timoteo performs Stewart Lemoine’s classic playlet The Gauntlet. And Rapid Fire Theatre drops by for a demonstration of wacky humour.

The Crystal Ball is a fundraiser for Shadow Theatre, Teatro La Quindicina and facility improvements for the Varscona Theatre. In addition to entertainment there is a post-show buffet. Tickets are $75 with a $50 charitable donation receipt. Call Shadow Theatre at 780-434-5564.

Beauty and the Beast now showing at the Citadel Theatre has added an additional performance on Sunday, May 30 at 7:30 p.m.

Directed by Bob Baker, this children’s fairytale explores looking beyond surface appearance. Tickets are $85. Call 780-425-1820 or visit www.citadeltheatre.com

Mark Ammar, co-host of Ammar’s Open Jam, welcomes back Maple Blues Award nominee Marshall Lawrence and crowd favourite Yuji I Hara. Marshal, also known as Doctor of the Blues, has released two CDs and is releasing his third, Blues Intervention, in June.

Hara hails from Japan with guitar chops many players envy. “Currently he’s the guitarist for Boogie Patrol and he gets hired to do gigs for some very big acts such as Graham Guest Band and has played stints with Don Johnson and Big Dave MacLean,” says Ammar.

The open jam is at LB’s Pub on Tuesday, May 25 from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. No cover.

The F-holes concert scheduled at The Taphouse on Friday, May 28 has been cancelled in a falling out between the booking agency and the bar, said band spokesperson Eric Lemoine.

“It’s disappointing,” Lemoine said. “It’s tough to replace. A lot of the good venues are already booked.”

However, on Saturday, May 29 at 2 p.m. they will play in Edmonton at The Black Dog Freehouse at 10425 Whyte Ave. and later that evening at Stony Plain’s Early Stage Saloon at 4911 52 Ave.
