Reel Monday Movie Nights has always enjoyed a broad appeal in St. Albert. It delivers popular films with top-tier actors that appeal to a wide audience. It’s a casual event and the proceeds support our local library.

Unlike major cinematic chains, it creates a warm, entertaining experience and builds community spirit.

For the month of October, Reel Mondays introduces Air, a story about the greatest sport sneaker ever made. The movie is directed by Ben Affleck and stars Affleck, Matt Damon, Jason Bateman, Chris Messina, Damian Young and Viola Davis.

Written by Alex Convey, the biographical sports drama is based on the real-life story of how Nike Inc. struck a deal with rookie basketball player Michael Jordan during the 1980s. The deal cemented Nike's brand legacy, attracted some of America’s most iconic basketball players, and the shoes themselves became a household name.

“The movie gets off to a slow start, but once you’re in it, it’s quite enjoyable. I loved Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, especially because they didn’t have glamorous parts,” said Reel Monday Movie Nights co-organizer Kathie Konarzewski.

The straightforward, absorbing yarn with crisp direction and dynamite performances was nominated and won major awards. However, it’s the underdog story that resonates with people across the spectrum.

“I don’t think it was a sports story. I think it was more a history of the company and it was quite enjoyable. There’s something about the big screen you can’t escape.”

Air screens on Monday, Oct. 16 at the Arden Theatre, 5 St. Anne Street. Tickets are $15 at the door.
