On Friday the City of St. Albert finally released its report on the 2012 municipal census.
Below are some of the most noteworthy numbers to come out of last year’s headcount. The city conducts its own census every two years. The next census will take place in 2014.
• St. Albert’s population is 60,994, up from 60,138 in the 2010 municipal census for a total growth rate of 1.4 per cent. The 2011 federal census showed the city’s population as 61,466.
• Of the different age groups, the most populous is between the ages of 45-54 at 9,264 individuals or 16 per cent of the population. Approximately 43 per cent of the city’s residents are between the ages of 35 and 64.
• The age group that grew the most between 2008 and 2012 comprises those aged 65 to 69 with 699 more residents falling in that category. There are 584 fewer people aged 45-49 in St. Albert than in 2008.
• There are 172 residents under the age of one, while there are 369 residents over the age of 90.
• The average age of St. Albert’s population is 39.3.
• North Ridge (1,071) and Erin Ridge (1,003) saw the most growth in St. Albert, while Deer Ridge (-264) and Pineview (-134) saw the greatest population decline among St. Albert neighbourhoods.
• Lacombe Park (6,727) and Grandin (6,610) are the most populated neighbourhoods in St. Albert, while the annexation area (49) and downtown (372) are the least populated.
• There are 22,409 dwelling units in St. Albert — 16,631 single family homes and 5,669 multi-family units.
• Lacombe Park has the most single-family units at 2,242 while Grandin has the most multi-family units at 1,539.
• Approximately 49 per cent of people in St. Albert who moved in 2012 moved to another house within St. Albert.
• The average single family dwelling houses 2.93 persons, compared to 2.27 per cent for duplexes/fourplexes, 2.02 for townhouses and 1.61 for apartments.
• Of the 11,710 residents who work in St. Albert, 1,776 work from home. A total of 21,704 work outside of St. Albert with 17,325 working in Edmonton, 2,362 working within 50 kilometres of Edmonton, 529 working in the Fort McMurray region and 1,488 working in other locations.
• Of 10,139 K-12 students living in St. Albert, 9,615 attend school in St. Albert or are home schooled, 397 go to Edmonton schools, 48 attend schools within 50-kilometres of Edmonton and 40 use distance learning or other.
• There are 2,186 full-time post-secondary students living in St. Albert, with 1,918 attending school in Edmonton, 55 attending in St. Albert, 12 within 50 kilometres of Edmonton and 201 using distance learning or other.
