In the last year, nine schools and libraries in the Edmonton-St. Albert federal constituency riding have been able to access refurbished computers.
A news release from Brent Rathgeber’s constituency office notes 208 computers, laptops and printers have been provided through the Computers for Schools program.
“I am pleased that students in St. Albert and Edmonton will benefit from these refurbished computers,” Rathgeber said in the release.
The federal government announced $36 million in renewed funding for the program earlier this month.
The program is lead by Industry Canada, who partner with TelecomPioneers and was founded in 1993.
According to the Alberta Computers for Schools website, the Alberta arm of the program gets financial support via Industry Canada and Alberta Education and began in 1997.
The Alberta website notes they are able to provide the computers free of charge.
Applications can be accepted from all Alberta schools, public libraries and non-profit learning organizations. They also have a home access/special needs initiative that can be applied for via the schools.
The news release from Rathgeber’s office notes the program’s intent is to increase all Canadians’ access to technology and since its federal founding has refurbished and donated over 1.1 million computers.
