St. Albert voters have selected Bob Russell as the new city councillor.

Russell received 1,860 votes, just under 36 per cent of the 5,211 votes cast according to preliminary results posted on the City of St. Albert's website on Wednesday night.

The turnout is estimated to be about 10.5 per cent.

“I'm just delighted” said the new councillor-elect, reached at his home Wednesday night. “We worked hard.”

Russell said he plans to carry his campaign brochure with him so he'll remember what he promised to voters. Some of his priorities will be to try and resurrect a municipal planning commission and a community policing committee. Russell is hardly a rookie councillor - he has served a few times on previous city councils.

He also pointed to the need to “make sure we do things right” when it comes to the proposed Grandin mall redevelopment by Amacon.

Russell will fill the seat vacated by former councillor Gilles Prefontaine, who triggered this byelection by resigning to take a position with the City of St. Albert.

The new councillor will likely be sworn in at the next council meeting, scheduled for July 6.

The rest of the candidates placed as follows: Edward Ramsden, 979, Tash Taylor, 786, Dawne Fowler, 512, Mark Cassidy, 508, Natalie Mikus, 277, Mark Turnbull, 198 and Hughena Burke, 91.
