A five-year-old St. Albert boy was airlifted to hospital Sunday evening after being struck by a pickup truck.

The boy was playing road hockey in a driveway on Gatewood Avenue and had just run into the street when he was struck.

“The little boy ran out into the street … to get the ball and then he got struck by a vehicle,” said Const. Janice Schoepp with the St. Albert RCMP.

The truck was headed westbound on Gatewood, toward Sir Winston Churchill Avenue.

Schoepp said the boy was airlifted to hospital and while his injuries are serious, he is expected to survive.

“He is in stable condition, but he has a skull fracture.”

Officers are still investigating the accident, but Schoepp said the driver, a man in his twenties, was not impaired.

“Speed may be a factor. It hasn’t been ruled out, though alcohol has.”

The STARS helicopter landed in a field behind Wildrose School before loading the boy inside and flying him to Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton.

According to Schoepp, a woman who rushed to the boy’s aid after the accident and fell in the process was also taken to hospital with minor injuries.
