Bus service resumes after weather delay

St. Albert Transit shut down local service due to the weather for a couple of hours Friday morning, waiting until public works could better clear the roads around the city.

Service inside St. Albert was suspended shortly before 9 a.m., according to Dawn Fedorvich, co-ordinator of customer service. Buses leaving Village Transit Station resumed at 10:38 a.m. while buses departing from St. Albert Centre started up at 11:06.

“We had to suspend local transit service because both the snow accumulation on the roads is posing a problem, but also because of the stranded vehicles left half on the road, half on the curb, blocking intersections and everything,” Fedorvich said.

Commuter service into Edmonton, which was experiencing 15 to 20 minute delays, is now running on schedule.

“There are still some delays locally so we are asking people to be patient and walk safely to their stops,” Fedorvich said.

Glenn Tompolski, director of public works, said crews are starting to catch up after the massive overnight blizzard.

“We were out all night,” Tompolski said. “There’s areas we’ve done that are pretty good. It’s streets we haven’t been able to get to yet. We’ll have a better idea this afternoon.

“We were a little behind and we’re definitely not ahead of the game. By noon we won’t be behind.”

Boudreau Road was even closed down for an hour between 8:30 and 9:30 this morning after a bus and several vehicles became stuck and the road was deemed unsafe for travel. It is now open.

Tompolski said, depending on the weather, there might be delays in waste collection for Thursday’s scheduled neighbourhoods. He also asked anyone who notices any fallen trees to contact public works at 780-459-1557.
