A campaign to support Canada’s Olympic athletes has garnered the St. Albert Centre a prestigious marketing award from the International Council of Shopping Centres (ICSC) in New York.

The St. Albert Centre picked up a Maple Leaf Silver Award in the ICSC’s annual Canadian Shopping Centre Awards competition for its “Go Canada Go” program, which was executed earlier this year in conjunction with its sister malls, Mill Woods Town Centre and Southgate.

St. Albert Centre was recognized in the cause-related marketing category, which recognizes a single or ongoing event, program or project that primarily benefits a charitable or community need, interest or cause.

During the Olympics, the centre set up Olympic TV viewing lounges, hosted Winter Games challenges and the “Ultimate Fan Contest.”

“For every gold medal won at the Olympics, the three centres donated $1,000 to Athletics Alberta,” said general manager Olympia Trencevski. At the end of the Olympics, she said a total of $14,000 was donated to the organization.

Trencevski said the campaign also included building a maple leaf monument which spent one week at each of the three centres. She said the community was welcome to sign a message to Canadian athletes on the monument, which was later sent to the athletes in Vancouver.

“It was quite a prize from all their friends from St. Albert Centre, Mill Woods Town Centre and Southgate,” Trencevski noted.

According to the ICSC, professional recognition for the campaign was given to Trencevski, and marketing assistant Shelly Dalrymple. The ICSC also recognized Millwoods Town Centre marketing director Georgina De Cordova, Southgate marketing director Claire Salaysay and Belinda Davidson, director of regional marketing for Ivanhoe Cambridge, which owns the St. Albert Centre.

“I’m very proud. I’m proud to have an astute team at St. Albert Centre who works by my side relentlessly and partnering with our other two properties, Southgate and Millwoods Town Centre,” said Trencevski, who has worked at the centre for two years.

“We could not have done this without them. It was a joint effort.”

The 2010 Canadian Shopping Centre Awards are designed to recognize outstanding achievement in marketing, design and development of retail properties and retail store design. The competition was open to shopping centre owners, developers, management companies, architects, designers and retailers.

Construction is under way on a two-storey mixed-use office/retail building at Boudreau Road and Inglewood Drive. Named the Summit Galleria, the development includes three main-floor units from 1,400 sq. ft. and six second-floor units from 1,000 sq. ft.

Landrex, the company behind the development, boasts that the steel and concrete building includes a brick and acrylic stucco exterior finish, an elevator and ample on-site parking.

Summit Galleria is located across from Sturgeon General Hospital, Dynalife Medical Lab, MIC (Medical Imaging Consultants) and Shoppers Drug Mart.
