“Wacky” burgers coming to St. Albert

After a one-year stInt in Slave Lake, Tu Le decided to bring his burger joint closer to home. Jack’s Burger Shack is expected to open in St. Albert in August.

Le said the small restaurant at 15 Perron St. will bring a fresh-food concept to the classic burger, fries and milkshake place.

“What sets us apart is that we do everything fresh daily. The buns are baked that day, the meat is ground locally and … all the sauces are housemade,” he said.

“We don’t have any microwaves, we just have freezers for ice cream … it’s fresh.”

Le said the restaurant also carries some special orders such as the Quebecer – a burger topped with fried cheese curds, gravy and homemade ranch sauce – or the Barbecue Crunch, a bacon and cheese burger topped with potato chips and homemade soda and orange juice sauce.

Customers can also delight in fresh-cut fries, sodas and homemade milkshakes made with vanilla ice cream and different ingredients, such as Nutella or Captain Crunch cereal.

“We make food that we enjoy eating and that was the concept,” Le said.

“A lot of these wacky burgers we came up with are things that when I was a bachelor I made for myself.”

Renovations of restaurants on the Trail

It’s that time in the economy when everyone wants to make sure they stay relevant, says local Arby’s owner and manager Michael Kukurba.

Kukurba is now renovating the outside of his franchise at 371 St. Albert Trail, following renovations to the interior five years ago. The restaurant remains open to customers.

“All the brands whether it be KFC, Taco Bell, McDonald’s, they all have stipulations in their franchise agreement that after a few years you have to update your building image,” he said. “It was just our time.”

Kukurba said neighbouring Taco Bell and KFC are also renovating.

While changes to his restaurant’s exterior were planned for months he said it was difficult to find contractors for a small renovation such as this one and they had to wait for spring.

Renovations to Arby’s will finish within the next three weeks. Taco Bell and KFC are expected to reopen for business in July.
