Two fraudsters are making their rounds in St. Albert.

Amy Berg knew something was wrong when she was approached at work about buying Mac Cosmetics products at a reduced price.

The Royal LePage office worker said two men walked into the business at 506 St. Albert Trail Thursday afternoon, claiming to promote a new Mac store coming to St. Albert in six months. When she asked for identification and the store’s location, they would not answer her.

“I said ‘I think you are fake,’” she said. “The other guy came in at that time and he swore at me.”

Berg said she called Mac Cosmetics in Edmonton after the men left and confirmed that they were not with the company.

A day later, Lynda Moffat, president and CEO of the St. Albert and District Chamber of Commerce, received an email from Randy Franks, director of security with Estee Lauder in Canada.

“Mac does not operate in this fashion and I can say that these two men are not employees of Mac Cosmetics,” he wrote. “If any of your members have had similar incidents, I would be pleased to hear from them. I am particularly interested if these males may have been captured on CCTV.”

Since this happens “every so often” in the community, Moffat advises to ask for identification and otherwise call the business to check up on these people. The police will also be contacted about the two men in the coming days.

“They are saying they are somebody they are clearly not,” she said. “It’s just good to let people know that this is out there and this is taking place.”

The two men were described as white males in their late 20s, wearing white shirts and black blazers. Berg said they offered to sell her two different products, including brushes, discounted to $60 from $180.

“People think they are getting a deal when really they are probably buying make-up with all kinds of chemicals in it,” she said. “Who knows what’s in their make-up.”
