Charity concert, fashion show rocks Beer Hunter this weekend

One of the city's most popular drinking establishments is putting the 'pub' into public service on Friday.

The Beer Hunter Bar and Grill is hoping for a full house of 250 when it hosts a fundraising concert in support of Edmonton's WIN House. It's a benefit brought to life via the Warrior Princess Project, an artist-run project that works for women's rights and safety in our communities.

Organizer Nicole Pawlik of Envy Art Productions said that she hopes that it will be successful enough to make it an annual event. She explains what the Warrior Princess Project is all about.

"Basically, it's an observation among society how far women have come, where they've come from, how far they still need to go and it's across Canada," she began.

Through the project, she has partnered with other artists and photographers to compile work for an upcoming exhibit that will also function as another charity fundraiser.

"This time we chose WIN House because one of the models that actually posed for me for the Warrior Princess Project stayed at the WIN House and had a lot of connections there. After hearing her story, a lot of us were really moved to pick this charity."

The benefit starts on Friday at 8 p.m. and features Rowena Manansala as the emcee. Some of the entertainment includes 1000 Words for Water, Cassie Anne May and Natalie Bryson, and Missy Pink, Morinville's own resident DJ at The Zoo.

There will also be a photo booth operated by St. Albert's Tabatha Gach Photography, plus models, artists and community activists to keep everyone's interest high.

50+ Club yells ‘Fore!'

The newly minted St. Albert 50+ Club (formerly the seniors' club) is teeing off in a week, and hopes to get many good golfers teed off too.

The organization is hosting its first annual Dinosaur Golf Classic on Wednesday, Aug. 29 at The Ranch Golf and Country Club, located at 52516 Range Rd 262 in Spruce Grove.

"It's going to be a great day," exclaimed the club's executive director, Chantelle Labrecque. "Of course, it raises funds for a great cause."

The classy classic will feature live classical music being played as the golfers enter the course.

The entry fee is $150 (or $600 for a foursome) and a tax receipt will be issued for a portion of that amount. Players get a complimentary breakfast and lunch out of the deal. There will be prizes, a 50/50 draw and a raffle, plus other contests as well. Labrecque hopes for a sellout of 144, with more than 100 having signed up already, meaning there are still lots of spots available.

"We're still looking for hole sponsors as well," she admitted. Those sponsorships can be obtained for $250.
