The City of St. Albert has made the shortlist for an environmental excellence award, in recognition of programs such as the Clean Energy Improvement Program and the Home Energy Efficiency Grant

The award, given out by the Alberta Emerald Foundation, comes with a $2,000 grant, a certificate, and the opportunity to be featured in a short documentary about the winner's environmental initiatives.

The Alberta Emerald Foundation is a registered charity that aims to share positive environmental stories in hopes of inspiring organizations and governments across Alberta to take steps towards meeting environmental stewardship goals.

Joining St. Albert as a finalist in the government category for an Emerald Award is Brazeau County and the Nose Creek Watershed Partnership, the foundation announced on March 23.

According to the Foundation's website, nominees are scored based on their level of environmental impact, community impact, alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and alignment with the Seventh Generation Principle

The Seventh Generation Principle refers to a Haudenosaunee philosophy that all decision making should consider how seven future generations of people will be affected.

Other Emerald Award categories include businesses, community groups, education, energy, infrastructure and more.

Award winners will be announced on June 7 as part of a ceremony at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton.
