A local man is dead after his vehicle entered oncoming traffic south of Legal Friday evening.

The man’s northbound car crossed the centre line on Hwy. 2 just south of Legal and was struck on the passenger side by a southbound SUV at roughly 6:30 p.m., said Morinville RCMP Cpl. Bryce Tarzwell.

A second northbound vehicle ended up in the ditch, but Tarzwell said it hasn’t yet been determined what, if any, role that vehicle played in the collision.

“It’s still under investigation,” he said, adding speed may have been a factor in the collision. He said alcohol has been ruled out as a factor.

Tarzwell said people were taken to the hospital by ground ambulance as a precautionary measure, but were later released.

The deceased male was the lone occupant in the northbound car. RCMP are not releasing the age or identity of the male, but confirmed he was local.

With the holidays fast approaching, Tarzwell encourages motorists to exercise caution when behind the wheel.

“Everybody should drive with care and caution. Roads are busy this time of year and we ask that everybody just leave lots of room and just drive with care.”
