Fill-a-Bus today

The St. Albert Kinettes, along with the fine people at St. Albert Transit and PWTransit, are putting on their 13th annual Fill-a-Bus event today from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Donations of non-perishable food and new, unwrapped gifts for children – aged 0 through 18 – will be accepted at the following locations: Canadian Tire, Costco, Sobeys, both Safeway stores, Superstore and Walmart.

Monetary donations will also be accepted (by cash or cheque). These can also be dropped off at Fire Hall #3, 100 Giroux Road and cheques can be mailed to: Kinette Club of St. Albert, Christmas Hamper Program, P.O. Box 65064, Mission Hill Plaza, St. Albert, AB T8N 5Y3.

The volunteer-run program works to help financially struggling families get through the tough winter season. Last year, more than 240 families received hampers.

More volunteers would be greatly appreciated as well. For more information, please email [email protected] or phone 780-965-6454.

Bellerose Composite High School’s Interact Club is starting a collection of socks to help out Boyle Street Community Services in downtown Edmonton. CBC Edmonton recently conducted the same sock drive to help homeless people with proper attire especially during the harsh winter season. It collected approximately 3,800 pairs.

The club, a high school Rotary chapter, is looking to meet or beat that total with 4,000 pairs of its own to offer to the cause. It is also collecting mittens and other winter wear.

According to the inner city organization’s website at www.boylestreet.org, it is always in need of socks, underwear, feminine hygiene products, backpacks, sleeping bags, gift cards in small denominations, and portable packaged foods (such as granola bars). Donations can also be dropped off in person at the centre at 10116 105 Avenue but please call 780-424-4106 first.

The Interact Sock Drive runs from Dec. 8 to 17. It is open to the public as well. People can bring their donations to the school located at 49 Giroux Road.

A couple of community-minded people are trying to reinvigorate the goodwill of Christmas with a seasonal challenge called 25 Days of Christmas – The Give Back Challenge.

“We want to bring back the true spirit Christmas in our communities by challenging ourselves to perform acts of kindness and gratitude through self-less acts during the 25 days of Christmas,” reads the description on the event’s page at www.facebook.com/jillandveronica.

The challenge is for participants to perform one act of kindness or goodwill per day. The rules stipulate that it cannot cost anything except time and that it must be done for each of the first 25 days in December.

People are encouraged to share their stories and photos on the Facebook page as well.
