Sturgeon County volunteer awards go mobile

Councillors to deliver awards in person instead of at ceremony

Some Sturgeon County residents will get an in-person visit from county council this month in recognition for their efforts as volunteers.

Sturgeon County council approved plans for a modified volunteer appreciation event at their Oct. 13 meeting.

County councillors typically honour Sturgeon’s most stalwart volunteers at the Sturgeon Proud dinner and gala, which had been scheduled for April 21 with some 300 people in attendance. That event was cancelled due to the pandemic.

County family and community support services manager Scott Rodda proposed a “drive-to” award ceremony later this month as an alternative. He proposed that councillors and county administrators drive to the homes of this year’s 23 recipients and deliver their awards in person. Winners would receive a copy of the book Caring is Everything by David Irving, a thank-you card signed by council  and a commemorative lawn sign.

Councillors voiced enthusiasm for the idea, with Coun. Patrick Tighe saying that the county should attach an eye-catching balloon to the lawn signs.

Mayor Alanna Hnatiw said she hoped these volunteers could find the time in their busy schedules to receive this recognition.

“They definitely are the best resource Sturgeon County has.”

Rodda said he would contact the recipients to confirm they were OK with this celebration.
