Five years for sexual assault

A St. Albert man was sentenced to five years in prison for sexually assaulting a woman while posing as a peace officer

On Monday, Court of Queen's Bench Justice Debra Yungwirth sentenced Kelly Plamondon to five years, with 181 days credit given for time spent in pre-trial custody.

Plamondon has been put on the national sex offenders registry for 20 years and ordered to submit a sample of DNA to the national DNA databank.

In 2016, Plamondon arranged to meet a woman working as an escort in an Edmonton hotel room. When she arrived, Plamondon presented a police badge and told her she was under arrest. Plamondon then rifled through her belongings looking for illegal items and used a radio to speak with a woman.

When the woman questioned if Plamondon was a police officer, he asked if she was questioning his authority, pulled out a knife and put it on the table and then sexually assaulted her.

Plamondon then went to take the woman to an ATM and use her bank card to take out money, but as they were leaving the hotel room, Plamondon walked ahead of the woman, and she kicked him in the butt and slammed the hotel door shut. The woman then called the police but he was gone by the time they arrived.

Crime spree appearance

A man who allegedly went on a crime spree that involved driving a stolen truck through several St. Albert backyards will appear in court later this month.

Matthew Marler, 30, of no fixed address, appeared in a Morinville courtroom earlier this month and put his matter over.

At around 2:20 a.m. on June 23, the Parkland RCMP were called to a report of a break and enter to a business in the Spruce Grove Industrial Park. Police say the man gained entry to the business and a service vehicle, with a tracking device, was stolen.

The RCMP tracked the vehicle to St. Albert, where the RCMP attempted to pull the vehicle over but the suspect fled from police.

The man then allegedly drove through multiple backyards in Erin Ridge, downing fences and narrowly missing houses along the way.

He then drove to Morinville where police say he committed several offences, including robbery, break and enter, and theft.

In a co-ordinated effort between Edmonton Police Service Air Services and Morinville, St. Albert and Parkland RCMP, the suspect was located and arrested without incident.

Marler is facing charges of robbery with an offensive weapon, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose, possession of break-in instruments, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, operation of a vehicle while prohibited, three counts of failing to comply with a probation order and five counts of failing to comply with conditions of an undertaking or recognizance.

Marler was also arrested for warrants from Athabasca, Red Deer and Boyle.

He is slated to attend the Stony Plain Provincial Court on July 24 for an election and plea.
