Alcohol is at the root of the problem for a St. Albert female found guilty in a pair of drunken assaults late last year.

Brittany Ronnie Stang pleaded guilty in St. Albert Provincial Court Monday to assault and assault causing bodily harm. She was handed a conditional discharge with 18 months probation.

Crown prosecutor John Donahoe told the court that Stang attended a house party in Sturgeon on Oct. 2, 2011 where she hit her ex-boyfriend in the head with a beer bottle.

“It’s clear that both parties had been consuming alcohol,” he said.

Roughly two months later, on Dec. 3, 2011, Stang returned to her residence intoxicated and began throwing items and causing a disturbance, he said. When her mother intervened, she was punched in the face.

“I think she’s learned a lot … from this incident,” said defence lawyer Phillip Lister. “It sounds like her life is back on track.”

Stang has no prior record and is ordered to abstain from drugs and alcohol, have no contact with the accused and attend any treatment or counselling as directed by probation, particularly relating to substance abuse and anger management.

She was also ordered to pay a $100 victim fine surcharge.

An addiction to video games was the reason 18-year-old Ryan Mahoney stole $540 of video games, movies and cash from a local Walmart store.

Mahoney pleaded guilty to theft under $5,000 for the Jan. 16 theft.

“These games are addictive,” said defence lawyer Tom Engel. “He advises me at the time of the offence, he had an addiction to movies and games.”

Mahoney paid restitution to Walmart and has already attended counselling to deal with his addiction.

Noting his youthful age and future aspirations to join the Canadian air force, Judge Bruce Garriock handed Mahoney a conditional discharge with six months probation, a $50 fine and 20 hours of community service.

“He’s trying his best. He made a youthful mistake,” said Engel.

Kayla Renee Chaisson pleaded guilty to assault with a weapon netting a $500 fine and one year probation.

“She got into what I would describe as an alcohol-fuelled fight,” Donahoe said.

On Feb. 23 Chaisson was at the Crown & Tower Pub when she became involved in an altercation with a co-worker.

She struck the female in the face with a bottle, giving her a swollen and bleeding lip.

She was ordered to attend treatment or counselling as directed by probation, particularly relating to substance abuse and anger management.
