The keen eye of a Servus Credit Union Place security guard led police to a stolen truck and led one of the culprits to a year of probation.

Ferid Billikwa pleaded guilty to a single count of possession of stolen property and was handed a year of probation.

The security guard spotted a pick-up truck pulling into the facility’s parking lot about 1:30 a.m. on June 24 last year and thought it was suspicious.

After approaching the vehicle and having it pull away, she contacted police who found the truck a short distance away. Police found the vehicle, but initially didn’t see anyone inside until they approached and found two men crouched down in the vehicle.

When an officer opened the door and the two men left the vehicle there was a strong odour of marijuana. Police ran the vehicle’s licence plate and discovered it did not belong to the truck and when they investigated further they found out the truck had been stolen from Leduc.

The probation term was suggested by both the crown and the defence. As part of it, Billikwa will have to take any counselling he is directed to and perform 40 hours of community service.

A hard night of drinking that led to a young man spending the weekend in jail, will also leave him with a year on probation as well.

Justin Cogswell pleaded guilty to a single count of assault stemming from an argument with his girlfriend that was fueled in large part by a bottle of vodka.

Police were called to a townhouse in Akinsdale Gardens last Thursday night and when they arrived there was a young woman standing outside the house.

The young woman was a friend of Cogswell’s girlfriend and the fight inside the townhouse was related to her. Cogswell decided he didn’t want the woman there anymore and locked her out of the house and the fight began when his girlfriend wanted to let her back in.

Crown prosecutor John Donahoe said Cogswell’s girlfriend swung a golf club at him and he pushed and shoved her. He said police photos showed both parties had cuts and bruises from the incident and both were very intoxicated.

Cogswell said he had very little recollection of the incident.

While on probation, Cogswell will have to take any counselling his probation officer recommends and cannot have any contact with his girlfriend, unless his probation officer approves.
