Stealing an outfit from a local department store earned a man the next 30 days behind bars.

Nathan Staheli pleaded guilty to theft under $5,000 in St. Albert Provincial Court Monday, where he appeared via closed-circuit television from the Edmonton Remand Centre.

Crown prosecutor Patricia Hankinson told the court that security personnel at The Bay in St. Albert Centre saw Staheli select a T-shirt and a pair of jeans and place them in a bag on Sept. 17 at around 5:30 p.m.

He concealed the items before exiting the store and failing to pay, she said. The items were valued at roughly $115.

“Mr. Staheli was fairly down and out,” said lawyer Marshall Gourlay, adding that his client had just found a place to live and was just starting a new job.

Staheli has a record with a number of related offences, Hankinson said, adding she was seeking between 30 and 45 days behind bars.

Gourlay said he felt Staheli’s time already spent behind bars – 14 days – was sufficient.

Judge Norman Mackie sided with the Crown and handed Staheli a 45-day sentence, with credit for time spent in pre-sentence custody.

Jonathan Ross is facing a substantial fine after a traffic stop revealed a lack of registration, insurance and valid driver’s licence.

Ross, 39, was pulled over by St. Albert RCMP on April 4 at roughly 6 p.m. after a police officer ran the licence plate on the vehicle and it came back stolen.

The court levied $3,335 in fines against Ross. Driving a vehicle with no insurance resulted in a $2,875 fine, while driving an unregistered vehicle and doing so without a valid licence each netted a $230 fine.

Hankinson withdrew a charge of possession of stolen property.
