Court briefs: Crystal meth trafficking and assault plea

On Monday, a man was sentenced to one year in jail and another 24 months on probation for trafficking crystal meth.

Man sentenced for drug trafficking

On Monday, a man was sentenced to one year in jail and another 24 months on probation for trafficking crystal meth.

Jesse Martial was also sentenced to a lifetime firearms prohibition.

The court heard Martial has had a long history with drug use, dating back to his teens.

Martial’s grandparents spent time in residential schools, where they suffered verbal and physical abuse. The effects of the schools have impacted the family, with many members developing drug addictions.

He said most of his family has spent time behind bars, and pleaded with the judge to give him time served.

“Right now I’m terrified, my family is terrified,” he said of going to jail.

A family member, who was sitting in the back of the room, let out a cry as he spoke.

“I want to get better, I don’t want to be an addict,” he said.

Prosecutors wanted Martial to spend up to 18 months in jail, but his defence lawyer argued Martial had a strong desire to change his life and wanted to get treatment.

Martial claimed he had only sold drugs to support his own habit.

The judge sentenced Martial to one year in prison and said the following 24 months should be focused on treatment and getting better.

Assault plea

A man will serve 19 days in jail after pleading guilty to assault on Monday.

On Feb. 27, St. Albert RCMP responded to a call after Lyndon Lee, 50, got into a fight with another man. The fight started after an exchange of words, and the court heard Lee punched the man in the back of the head.

Lee was sentenced to 90 days in jail, but has already been in custody since his arrest in February.

Court heard Lee has an extensive criminal record dating back to the 1980s, mostly relating to robberies.
