Crash at Cardiff Corner kills one

A 53-year-old Parkland County woman was killed Friday afternoon at the Cardiff Corner intersection just south of Morinville.

A 53-year-old Parkland County woman was killed Friday afternoon at the Cardiff Corner intersection just south of Morinville.

The woman was driving northbound on Highway 2, when she collided with a cube van carrying tools that was crossing the highway.

The woman and two other passengers were taken to hospital, where the woman died. The two passengers were seriously injured but survived.

The driver of the cube van has been charged with falling to proceed safely from a stop sign.

The Cardiff Road intersection has seen deadly collisions in the past. Last summer the province announced an interchange at that location. That interchange was originally supposed to open in 2013, but delays have pushed that back at least one year.

Morinville RCMP Sgt. Mark Mathias said the intersection calls for drivers to pay attention and proceed safely.

“Motorists at any intersection should certainly be aware of the traffic volume and the risk of crossing a two-lane highway,” he said.

The collision is still under investigation, but Mathias said at this point the police do not anticipate any further charges.
