Monjeloco Jeans will celebrate its second year in business Sunday with a Brazilian-style street fiesta with lots of food, music and dancing, the final of the World Cup broadcast out onto the street and perhaps a Dragon or two from CBC.
The Perron Street store, which specializes in hand-made figure-flattering jeans, will also host a fashion show and the runway will also be outside for everyone to see.
“It’s going to be a Latin party, because I’m originally from Colombia,” said Monjeloco Jeans owner Nora Furber.
Furber first opened her business in May 2012 and last fall the entrepreneur was featured on CBC’s Dragons’ Den.
She offered the judges 40 per cent of her business for $300,000 but was not successful in winning the judges’ support. Nonetheless she was told she might have the opportunity to come back this year to try again. She’s hopeful that this weekend’s filming event will be a precursor to a second appearance on the show.
“We don’t know what’s happening with Dragons’ Den. It’s a big surprise,” she said, adding that CBC has requested the presence of Mayor Nolan Crouse and that Perron Street be closed off from noon to 5 p.m. for the filming and for the fiesta.
“They are also going to show highlights about St. Albert and talk about St. Albert,” Furber said.
Since the filming coincides with the final of the World Cup, Furber will have that event shown outside. In addition, food vendors and zumba dance teachers will be on both sides of the street offering food and dance lessons.
“Some of the food will be free and offered for a donation to a Columbian orphanage. The Brazilian Canadian Coffee Company will have cold and hot coffee and smoothies. Funki Fit will teach Latin dancing. Earl’s will have mojitos and there will be Columbian ice cream with coffee and rum flavours. The only thing that there will be a charge for is the Mexican tacos, because they are expensive to make with chicken and steak,” Furber said.
The first of three fashion shows takes place at noon and will be filmed, Furber said, but the store itself will be closed with only limited access during the inside filming portions.
“We’re excited to see who will come from CBC’s Dragons’ Den. Everyone is invited to come down to Perron Street and join us in our celebration,” she said.
The Monjeloco Jeans Latin Fiesta will take place Sunday, July 13 from noon until 5 p.m. on Perron Street.
