Dough-stuffed envelope stumps bakery staff

St. Albert RCMP are looking to reunite a local bakery patron with a package of cash that was left behind more than two months ago.

An envelope stuffed with hundreds of dollars was left on the counter at Cobb’s Bakery at 212 Hebert Road on Oct. 3, and has since gone unclaimed.

Staff at the bakery kept the package until Dec. 10, when they turned it over to police.

“The bakery employees held onto it because they believed that someone might come to pick it up,” said St. Albert RCMP Const. Janice Schoepp.

RCMP policy requires police to hold onto lost money for 90 days from the date it was found. Schoepp said she’s not sure whether the 90 days will start Oct. 3 or Dec. 10.

If the package remains unclaimed by the time the 90 days are up, the money will be returned to bakery staff.

“I think everyone just assumes that people are going to keep money and that’s not true,” Schoepp said. “A lot of people are more honest than we give them credit for.”

Anyone who thinks the money could be theirs should contact St. Albert RCMP at 780-458-7700. Police require anyone attempting to claim the money to describe the envelope and the sum of money inside.
