Eat lots, work out smart to be in great shape

When was the last time you had seven meals in one day? According to Brittany Uchach, that’s what we should all do every day in order to get and stay healthy.

The exercise and wellness specialist at Servus Place is conducting a workshop this morning called Creating Balance with Nutrition and Activity. She says that it’s actually easier than you think to teach your body to have a high metabolism and also to make the most out of your workout. All you need is balance.

“We’re going to talk about how you need to balance and get your results through exercise and through nutrition. You don’t have to go so extreme with one or the other,” she began.

She said that one of the easiest ways for most people to rev up their metabolism is by simply eating more often, but not necessarily more food.

“You want to eat so that you’re fuelling the body. The worst thing is to eat three meals a day because they’re usually highly caloric. The body’s going to have to do a lot more work at breaking down the energy. If you’ve trained your body to only get three meals a day, then it knows it’s not going to get energy for another five or six hours until you eat again, so it’s going to store.”

She said having smaller meals, even a piece of fruit or a cup of yogurt, every two to three hours will put your body in a “burning mode.”

This also helps to regulate your insulin level so that it doesn’t spike up and dip down like a rollercoaster.

“If people are looking for weight loss then that’s the last thing that you want.”

She will also talk about how to make your workouts more metabolic so that you can burn more calories in a shorter period of time, so you don’t have to exercise for long periods.

“You can maximize your workouts by making sure that you can get more calorie expenditure by doing more movement, working more muscle groups per exercise other than just focusing on one, and not separating the cardio and resistance training but actually combining it together as one.”

She said that you can have an amazing workout in 30 minutes, especially if you do it circuit style with one exercise after another instead of taking rest periods.

“The trick is to increase the movement. Instead of doing just one, like a normal biceps curl, you can integrate it with your lower body. Lower body muscles are a lot larger; they require more blood and more oxygen. Therefore you’ll be expending a lot more energy.”

The workshop runs from 9 to 10 a.m. The cost is a regular drop-in admission price or current membership with the club. Those who are interested can sign up at the fitness desk. Spots are still available.
