This year’s theme for Education Week is “We Are Teachers,” drawing attention to the vital role teachers play in Alberta children’s futures.

“Alberta Education invites you to celebrate Education Week 2014 in schools and communities across the province,” stated the provincial government in a press release.

“Education Week provides all Albertans with an opportunity to highlight the important role education plays in shaping the future of our province.”

Teachers are key

According to the Alberta Teachers Association, today, more than ever, teachers are committed to creating an inspired future for every child. Teachers and their professional organization, the Alberta Teachers’ Association, are working hard with education partners to ensure that students have optimal learning conditions.

The ATA went on to say, to be lifelong learners, students must have ingenuity, creativity, critical thinking skills, and citizenship skills.

Students need a broad range of learning experiences that go beyond the basic subjects of math, language arts, science and social studies. Schools, while preparing students for a diversity of possible futures, must also ensure students experience the joy of learning while at school.

Local activities

Many St. Albert schools are marking Education Week with special activities. Ecole Sainte Marguerite d'Youville is, on May 6, hosting a career fair in which visitors from the community will present the highlights and challenges of their career to the junior high students. Students will choose to attend two sessions from a total of 15 choices.

Some of the choices include: nurse, corporal in the military, athlete, veterinarian, mechanic, esthetician, and the list goes on. Grade 9 students will be welcoming each guest, introducing them and providing snacks for them at the end of the afternoon. It promises to be an exciting event and it may help students to make considerations for possible future career choices.
