Eight vie for vacant Legal council seats

Legal residents could be spoiled for choice this December now that eight people are in the running for town council.

Tuesday was nomination day for the 2012 Legal town council byelection. Two seats are up for grabs.

Council called for a byelection last month after Albert St. Jean and Phil Hughes gave up their seats – the former because he’s moving out of town and the latter because he was required to under the Municipal Government Act (he had missed all council meetings during an eight-week period, which the act forbids).

Eight people put their names forward as candidates Tuesday, which is quite a few for a byelection, said Wilma Weiss, the town’s returning officer.

“That’s better than what we sometimes get for general elections,” she said.

The nominees officially become candidates as of noon Wednesday.

In no particular order, the candidates are Kurtis Hauptman, Carol Tremblay, Shealene Page, Yvonne Bilodeau (Cyr), Curtis Epp, Ron Sharma, Florence Lamb and Joey Seitz. The Gazette will have profiles of each candidate posted on its website later this week.

Residents will cast their votes on Dec. 3 to pick two of these candidates for council, Weiss said. You must be 18 or over, a Canadian citizen, an Alberta resident for six consecutive prior to Dec. 3 and a Legal resident on Dec. 3 in order to vote in the election.

The polling station will be open at the Citadel Centre from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. There will be no advance poll. Call the town office at 780-961-3773 for details.
