An eight-year-old St. Albert boy is showing how much one person can do to help others.
Finley Rose had his lengthy locks cut down to the roots last Saturday at Tudor Glen Barber Shop to both raise funds for cancer charity and also to donate his considerable hair to charity.
Finley said he started growing his hair in 2012, when he was only six years old.
“A kid in my school grew his hair to donate, and they showed pictures in assembly one day,” stated Finley in a press release.
“I decided I wanted to donate my hair as well. Also, my Poppy had cancer and I wanted to do something for him.
“So I decided to grow my hair to donate to help make a wig for a kid with cancer who lost their own hair.”
Finley said the closest organization he could find was in British Columbia.
“Not being able to find an organization in Alberta that accepts donated hair to make wigs for kids with cancer, my mom found the Wigs for Kids B.C.,” he stated.
“Wigs for Kids B.C. is a committee of volunteers that raises money to provide custom-fitted human-hair wigs for children suffering hair loss due to cancer.
“They state that the Wigs for Kids B.C. program has absolutely no overhead. Every dollar we raise is used to further our mission: Helping B.C. kids living with cancer, live better.’”
Finley’s mom, Janet, said he’d raised more than $800 by the time he had his hair cut.
“So the total amount that Finley raised was $1,071.85,” stated Janet in an email.
“I give you that exact amount because some of the kids in his Grade 2 class put their own money in towards it as well, and some was a quarter, some 30 cents.”
One of the stylists at Tudor Glen Barber Shop donated her services to cut Finley's hair.
Janet said she was very proud to see her son so strongly motivated to help people he doesn’t even know.
“He is my inspiration,” she added.
